Galaxy S8 Release Date Rumors: Samsung 2017 Flagship Will Unbox in Two Curved Display Models?

The new addition to Samsung's high-end Galaxy S series - Galaxy S8 - will have a 4K high-resolution display at 860ppi.

The recalled Galaxy Note 7 is the most solid hint of what the Galaxy S8 will be on release date. Reports from South Korea indicate that like the 2016 phablet flagship, the GS8 will unbox in two model boasting of double-edge displays. The flat-screen edition will be no more.

"Samsung Electronics is considering ditching a flat-screen version for its next flagship Galaxy S8 that is expected to come out next year with a curved display only," the Korea Herald reported. The publication pointed to industry insiders as source of its information.

The plan seems line with the latest flagship issued by the Asian tech giant. The Galaxy Note 7 debuted with only the 5.7-inch curved-display model unlike the Galaxy S7 that hit the market in two flavors - the regular S7 build and the S7 Edge.

Samsung, the report said, intends to highlight the Edge display as the core feature of its flagship handsets. And the company is preparing early as same publication claimed that this early curved display panels have been ordered from Samsung Display and the latter will deliver in 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes.

The move was made to avoid repeating the mistakes made with the Galaxy S6 Edge last year. "In 2015 when the company adopted the curvy screen for the first time for the Galaxy S6 Edge, it failed to continue the sales momentum due to supply constraints," the report said.

Also for the Galaxy S8 push in 2017, Samsung teased of a more enhanced rendering of the curved display but provided no specific details on the supposed improvements.

But for the other S8 feature upgrades, rumors are already aplenty. BGR said that like the iPhone 7 and 7 plus, the GS8 will impress with its own version of dual-lens rear shooter with the sensor likely maintaining the 12-megapixel currently found on the S7, S7 Edge and the Note 7.

The front-facing cam though is rumored to be bumped up to 8-megapixel. And another fresh Note 7 feature is believed to be extended to the Galaxy S8 - the iris scanner that added another layer of biometrics-based security to the Galaxy Note 7.

Android fans expect the Galaxy S8 to be unveiled via the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 in Barcelona, Spain with the actual release date likely happening anytime in March. The Samsung flagship will certainly rock the latest version of Android Nougat out of the box.
