Chinese Scholars Make the Case for China Replacing the US as World Hegemon

18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, slammed the United States as the "source of turmoil in the world" and said American-style liberty and democracy have made people's lives worse in an article that also argued China's time was at hand.

The paper, however, glossed over the suppression of individual freedoms by China dictatorial communist government and China's bullying of Asian neighbors opposed to its hegemony.

Three articles by Chinese scholars in the paper analyzed the United States' alleged "hegemonic moves" from different perspectives. The conclusion to be drawn is the world would be a much more peaceful and more prosperous place were China to replace the United States as the dominant hegemon.

"The United States is keen to make messes in the world, cast shadows on order and stability in multiple regions and jeopardize peace and development in relevant countries," said an editor's note prefacing these three articles.

The "military-industrial complex" in the U.S. naturally demands war and military expansion, resulting in the Iraq War, the "Arab Spring" uprisings and growing tensions with Russia and China, said Yang Guangbin, a professor of politics at Renmin University, a public research university in Beijing.

Yang also criticized the United States for selling its ideology he claims has basically screwed many countries.

"Countries that have followed American-style 'liberty and democracy' are not turning into American-style states. Instead, their lives remain the same, or even become worse," said Yang.

Another article claims the United States' eagerness to make trouble around the world is due to its "hegemonic anxiety."

This is "to a large degree, a reflection of a twisted mentality of an empire moving downhill," said Li Wen, a researcher with an institute studying "socialism with Chinese characteristics" under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the most comprehensive academic research organization and national center in China.

The United States no longer tends to build and protect world order and peace in order to improve its international status, argues Li. Instead, the U.S. has turned into a disrupter of order and peace to maintain its status quo.

Li said the US is making mischief in the world to sustain the dollar's supremacy and its hegemony in military, political and cultural fields. He also blasted the U.S.' efforts to contain China by "causing trouble in East Asia."

Lin Hongyu, a professor at Huaqiao University in Fujian, said U.S. maneuvers in the Asia-Pacific region are just part of its overseas expansion and interventionist diplomacy to maintain its premier international role.
