The fans of the popular anime series ''Sword Art Online'' have been waiting for the release of the season 3 for a long time. As per the latest reports, it seems that the creators will release the new season 3 in 2018 after the release the live action series in 2017.

Skydance media has acquired the television rights of ''Sword Art Online'' and they are trying to come up with a live action series soon. "I am excited and moved that 'Sword Art Online' will be adapted into a live action series by the highly respected Skydance Media'' stated Reki Kawahara, the author of the original series. ''I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation and gratitude to everyone involved in this project, and to the fans all over the world who have so generously and enthusiastically supported SAO'' he clarified further, reported Variety.

According to when-will.net, this series is neither cancelled nor renewed. The A-1 Pictures studio, which is the producer of this franchise, has not taken any concrete decision about airing season 3. The first episode was aired on July 8, 2012 on Tokyo MX and was entitled "Ken no Sekai." The English dubbed episode was aired on July 27, 2013 and was entitled "The World of Swords."

It has been more than two years and the season 3 has not been released yet. Though the creators have talked about releasing the movie in 2018, it is expected that season 3 will be released after the movie is released world-wide and ''Sword Art Online'' creates a bigger fan-base across the globe.

It has also come up in various forums that season 3 will be based on the light novel's latest arc, "Alicization". It is predicted that the season 3 too will have a good amount of romance between the protagonists Kirito and Asuna in the series. In the first episode the fans saw Akihiko Kayaba, the game's creator and employee of the computer corporation Argus released a game named as "Sword Art Online." This is the first virtual reality game which the world experiences and a virtual reality gaming system known as the "NerveGear" is also released along with the game.

Kazuto ''Kirito'' Kirigaya is one of the 1,000 beta testers for a new state-of-the-art virtual reality MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game). In the first episode he is shown to log on to the Aincrad and befriend a novice player Klein. He teaches the basics of the game to him and both realise after a while that they cannot log out of the system. Kayaba announces that he had removed the log out option so that he gets the respect of God in his domain.

He informs that the players will die if the NerveGear is forcefully removed and they will be forced to complete the 100 floors of Aincrad. If their in-game health bar is depleted to zero, there is no way they can survive. The first 14 episodes of the anime series of season 1 was based on the arc ''Aincrad.''

Now while the fans wait for the season 3 to be released, they can watch the episodes of season 1 and 2 online. Watch the first six episodes of ''Sword Art Online here.
