'Doctor Strange' actor Benedict Cumberbatch hints 'Sherlock' Season 4 could be the last one

Benedict Cumberbatch plays the title role in "Sherlock," opposite Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson.

"Sherlock" Season 4 is close to launching as the release date is set for 2017 but the showrunners and even Benedict Cumberbatch himself confirmed that it could be the last season to be aired.

Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman helped make the "Sherlock" TV series into what it is today. With only a few episodes per season which airs every two years or so, the show went on to garner a large fan base.

The TV series is adapted from Arthur Conan Doyle's books with the same name. What made it click is that Sherlock's adventures were set in the modern timeline and Cumberbatch's acing skills help deliver what the show promises.

Cumberbatch told GQ UK in an interview that the "Sherlock" Season 4 could be the last one for the show and that if "feels like the end of an era," Deadline has learned. In the last season, "Sherlock" was pulled back because Moriarty seems to be back even though he died already.

"We never say never on the show. I'd love to revisit it, I'd love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we've made something very complete as it is, so I think we'll just wait and see. The idea of never playing him again is really galling," Cumberbatch said in the interview.

BBC and PBS have not yet renewed the show for its fifth season and the showrunners themselves told fans that "Sherlock" could end soon. There are still a lot of books and stories that can be covered but the seemingly busy schedule of both Cumberbatch and Freeman could be a problem too.

Even Steven Moffat said that they do not know how long they can keep up with the production of "Sherlock" after Season 4, Nerdist reported. Both Cumberbatch and Freeman have entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the former having his own stand-alone movie Marvel's "Doctor Strange" to be shown in November.

"Sherlock" Season 4 is set to air in 2017 and fans should just be ready to accept the fact that it would be the last one for the show. There is still a chance but the networks have been quiet about how they want to proceed with the show.
