Kickass Torrents crew moves database to new domain; Members call for funds to sustain growth

KickassTorrents (commonly abbreviated KAT) was a website that provided a directory for torrent files and magnet links to facilitate peer-to-peer file sharing using the BitTorrent protocol.

Kickass Torrents community is silently restoring its domain's former glory after its original website under the moniker Kissass Torrents (KAT) was seized and turned down from its operations. The said move was through the efforts of The Motion Picture Association of America's (MPAA) at shutting down torrent websites as a part of their movement against piracy. Following the website's shutdown, the site's alleged owner was arrested in Poland on the United States government orders.

The renowned Kickass Torrents website, which is a virtual home for downloading music, videos and other software, was shutdown in July, even leaving its owner Artem Vaulin with a prison sentence, YIBADA reported. Because of this, other torrent websites such as The Pirate Bay, TPBClean, and Torrentz.eu has attracted former Kickass Torrents users by offering similar torrent features.

However, a group of admins and moderators of the original KAT site were reportedly working on this mirror site, tagged as "KAT.how," although its authenticity and user security is yet to be fully confirmed.

With the torrent database in the possession of the KAT crewmembers, they opened a mirror site and established a fundraising campaign to collect money to repair and rebuild the authentic KickassTorrents site code.

According to Earnspree, the official moderators of the KickAss torrents site resurrected the community page with login/sign-up functionality intact. Among the official kickasstorrents team, the person who identified himself as Mr. Black, said that the arrest of the owner won't affect the KAT community.

"We need to remember that Kickass Torrents is not simply about uploading, the heart and soul of KAT is our members, which are family and family is important as we all know. Nothing can ever take that away and no matter what happens we will not let our community down," the same publication quoted Mr. Black as saying.

He added "We guarantee that KAT will continue in one form or another and we will come back stronger than ever."

Mr. Gooner, a long time KAT crewmember aka the President, explained that the original staff members have returned to the community, and the group is gathering funds via PayPal and a Gofundme campaign with the hope of collecting several thousands of dollars in order to help restore the download and upload functionality of the new KAT alternative website.
