WhatsApp video calling now available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone; Video calls optimized for poor internet connection

Whatsapp has finally introduced the much-awaited WhatsApp video calling feature. The new feature has been optimized low speed internet connection.

Just like FaceTime, Skype, Facebook Messenger and other apps allow people to make video calls, starting today even WhatsApp users will be able to make video calls on Wi-Fi and data. The co-founder of WhatsApp, Jan Koum has confirmed that the video calling feature would be available to WhatsApp users in 180 countries, NDTV reported.

WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, was launched in 2009. Group chat feature was added to it two years after its launch and the voice calling feature arrive four years later. Finally, the video calling feature has also arrived on WhatsApp.

According to the official WhatsApp blog, the reason why the company decided on adding video calling feature is that "sometimes voice and text just aren't enough. There's no substitute for watching your grandchild take her first steps, or seeing your daughter's face while she's studying abroad."

How to Make WhatsApp Video Calls?

It is quite easy to make video calls on WhatsApp. Users are can tap on the call icon present on an active chat window of a contact. It will prompt users to make a voice call or a video call.

The feature is being gradually rolled out to all the users on iOS, Android and Windows Phone across the world. The updated app with video calling will be gradually available to all users.  Hence, video calls can be initiated between those WhatsApp users who have successfully updated to the latest version of the software with video calling feature.

If a user is running an older version of WhatsApp, the call button when tapped will prompt users to update to the latest version.

End-to-End Encryption

Just like WhatsApp privacy with end-to-end encryption for text messages and voice calls, the said security and privacy feature is also available on video calls. End-to-end encryptions makes it almost impossible for Whatsapp, any company or government agencies to view messages and listen or watch calls.

Optimized for Poor Internet Connection

WhatsApp video calling is optimized for poor internet connection regions. Hence, it should be working fine even in budget-friendly phones and in areas where best cellular connectivity is unavailable, NDTV reported
