Telltale Games have unveiled "Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series" during this year's Game Awards. This will be the developer's first foray into the Marvel comic book universe. Previously they worked "Batman" and "The Walking Dead," based on DC and Image Comics respectively.
Like previous games the developers had released before, "Guardians of the Galaxy" will be an adventure game focusing on player choices and multiple story branches instead of frantic run-and-gun action. Previous titles featured quick-time events to handle action segments and it is expected that "Guardians of the Galaxy" will do the same.
According to the official website, the game will release for consoles, PC and mobile devices in 2017. No specific platforms were mentioned although it is expected to release for PS4 and Xbox One given that previous games from the developer launched on them too. A Nintendo Switch port is still uncertain.
"In Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series,' players will take on multiple roles within the ragtag band of heroes, and take the pilot's seat in directing their escapades around the universe," explained Telltale Games CEO and co-founder Kevin Bruner.
Bruner further explained that the game will utilize the sense of teamwork, humor, and action that the "Guardians of the Galaxy" are known for.
It was not stated if the game would be based primarily on the comic books or if it would take inspiration from the live-action films. The teaser trailer did hint at strong connections to the movie but nothing has yet been confirmed at this point.
It is also uncertain if the actors from the live-action films will be reprising their roles to voice the characters in the game. It should be noted that Scott Wilson, who played Hershel in "The Walking Dead" television series, did not reprise his role in the game. Hershel was instead voiced by Chuck Kourouklis.
Telltale Games announced they had partnered with Marvel as far back as 2015, reported IGN. However, neither Marvel nor Telltale Games announced what game they would be collaborating on. The announcement of this title also coincides with the release of the second live-action movie, which releases in May 2017.
