In "You Haven't Done Nothin'," Alex was convinced that he was waiting jail time for attacking Andrew de Luca (Giacomo Gianniotti) a few months earlier. In the finale for Season 12, Alex walked in on Andrew taking care of Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington). At first glance, Alex thought that Andrew was trying to take advantage of Jo because they were also drunk.
Scared of what the future has in store for him, Alex and Jo had a conversation on whether or not they should fix their relationship. In the end, Alex decided that he could not wait for the judge's decision on his case. Instead, he felt that fleeing would be his best bet.
Now that Alex is gone, it seems that executive producer Shonda Rhimes is finding a good way to get rid of Chambers in the upcoming episodes. There are ongoing rumors that the actor will be leaving the hit ABC series to pursue other projects. On the other hand, it's also possible that Chambers' exit from "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 is only temporary.
Meanwhile, Alex and Meredith's storyline still hasn't been addressed. Ahead of the Season 13 premiere, executive producer Betsy Beers told E! News that she understands why some fans are rooting for the best friends to become a couple. According to the exec, she understands why everyone just wants Alex and Meredith to be happy with each other. However, there are also a shot of Jolex shippers who could go "crazy" if they split for good.
Pompeo herself also told US Weekly that Meredith will always be there for Alex no matter what. Despite the potential risks their friendship could bring about, Alex will always be Meredith's ride-or-die. As for a possible relationship between the two characters, Pompeo only knows for sure that Meredith and Nathan (Martin Henderson) are still acting as secret "lovers," and they still want to keep their affair from Maggie (Kelly McCreary).
"Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 will return to ABC with new episodes starting Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. EST.
