Spotify arrives on the Gear S3 smartwatch from Samsung

The Samsung Gear S3 is still being compared to its predecessor the S2 but it has not stopped the Korean company from releasing the Spotify app on these two smartwatches.

When it comes to smartwatches, the Gear S2 and this year's edition the Gear S3 have been getting a lot of attention in the press and from users. Last year's Gear S2 even propelled Samsung into the list of top smartwatch vendors, however, this time round the focus has been on the apps arriving on the Gear S3.

The lack of apps for these smartwatches which run Tizen instead of the more popular Android Wear, was highlighted by 9to5 Google. It went on to describe how the addition to Spotify to the range of apps available for the Gear S2 and the S3 is a welcome move.

As soon as the Spotify app was launched for the smartwatches, it became clear that app had taken full advantage of the functionality provided by the rotating bezels on the devices which were used to navigate through options. Using the app importantly will give users full access to their library of songs on Spotify, and they will be able to  search for new music on charts. However, the user can also employ their voice to select songs on their smartwatch.

Also the app can operate in two modes, the first of this is "remote" which will sync it with the Spotify app on a paired Android device which will be in charge of controlling playback. As for the "stream" mode it will allows users who have the cellular version of the Gear S2 and the S3 to directly stream audio. They will be able to listen to this audio via a Bluetooth headset or with the aid of the speakers onboard the smartwatches.

Since this app is not a standalone version users will have to user it in conjunction with their mobile  device, reported SamMobile. It also pointed out that users who wanted to get Spotify on their Gear S2 and the Gear S3 can head over to the Galaxy Apps Store and download it using their smartphone.

Importantly, currently the app does not allow for music to be downloaded to these Tizen smartwatches and therefore there is no chance of playing music in offline mode. Users therefore will need to have access to either LTE or Wi-Fi to get the app to churn out music.
