Microsoft Surface Pro 5, Surface Book 2 to feature eSIM technology

| Dec 25, 2016 12:22 AM EST

The Surface Pro 4 is the latest in Microsoft's hybrid tablet laptop line.

Microsoft may be using an eSIM for the upcoming Surface Pro 5. However, the Redmond-based tech giant has yet to officially reveal the product's specs and features.

One of the rare successes from Microsoft is the Surface Pro line. They bridge the gap between a laptop and a tablet thanks to its powerful and versatile hardware. Despite its success, Microsoft seems to be taking its time in developing a new product but there seems to be new updates regarding the upcoming hybrid laptop tablet.

Insider sources told German tech blog Dr. Windows that the Surface Pro 5 may support eSIM technology to make it easier for users to choose providers. Aside from the Surface Pro 5, the Surface Book 2 will also be installed with eSIM support.

Both the Surface Pro 5 and the Surface Book 2 still have no release dates but they are expected to be released some time in 2017. They could possibly be better choices compared to the iMac 2017 if the budget of the customer is limited or if the purpose is just for casual use only.

The eSIM technology will allow Surface Pro 5 and Surface Book 2 users to standardize the carrier choice based on the hardware, Yahoo News reported. It will also allow the device to connect to the Internet without having to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot.

When the user is travelling overseas, they will be able to use the available carriers in the area without having to buy a new sim altogether. This helps prevent roaming charges as the eSIM automatically switches to the country's available carriers instead of having to stick to the user's original location.

Microsoft could reveal the Surface Pro 5 and the Surface Book 2 with eSIM technology at the upcoming CES 2017 or MWC 2017 event. Specs and features could be revealed by then.
