Sony Music Entertainment Twitter account hacked, tweets Britney Spears death hoax

| Dec 27, 2016 08:20 PM EST

Singer Britney Spears performs onstage during 102.7 KIIS FM's Jingle Ball 2016 presented by Capital One at Staples Center on December 2, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.

Sony has been hacked again as their official Music Entertainment Twitter account tweets that Hollywood star Britney Spears died recently. Musician Bob Dylan seems to have believed the hoax as he also spread the fake news.

Hacking events are becoming more common these days even with increasingly complex encryption techniques and two-factor authentication. Sony Music Entertainment's Twitter account has fallen victim to a hack claimed by the OurMine Security group.

The attack that was used in the hack was not specified and Sony did not mention how they were compromised in the first place. Sony said in a statement obtained by The Guardian that they have already rectified the problem and apologized to Spears and her fans.

Sony Music Entertainment's Twitter spewed out false tweets with the first one reading "RIP @britneyspears." Sony artist Bob Dylan also posted a now-deleted tweet with a similar thought. He could have thought that the news was legit since it was Sony's official account that posted it. Sony also apologizes for the confusion and Dylan also sent out a tweet, which has now been deleted, later that the Spears' official account was hacked even though there were no recent tweets from the pop music icon.

OurMine Security added a now-deleted tweet in through Sony's account that they checked to see whether if it was hacked or not, Heavy reported.  Sony did not mention the hacking group in their statements or if they had contact with them in the first place.

Sony was already hacked in 2014 when the film "The Interview" was nearing its release date. Hacker group Guardians of Peace demanded that the movie should not be shown in theatres. They already released several emails of Sony executives which ultimately led to Amy Pascal stepping down as a co-chairperson in the company.

Spears is well and alive despite the false tweets from Sony Music Entertainment's official Twitter account. OurMine has not made any tweets again through the account after Sony's statement to the press.
