'Winds of Winter' writer George R. R. Martin and Joe Lansdale pose before SundanceTV's 'Hap & Leonard' Screening at the Jean Cocteau Theater on February 23, 2016 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The much-delayed book "Winds of Winter" is expected to be over 1500 pages. The length of the book may be one of the reasons why it is taking so long to release the book.

The extreme length of "Winds of Winter" may be perhaps one of the reasons why it is taking so long to finish it, according to Reddit. The first book "Game of Thrones" of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series was 1,000 pages. It was followed by "A Clash of Kings," which was 1,100 pages.

"A Storm of Swords," which is the third book in the series is 1,400 pages whereas its succeeding book "A Feast for Crows" is just 1,100 pages. However, the last published book in the series is "A Dance with Dragons" and it is over 1,500 pages.

Almost all the books in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series have more pages than their predecessors with the exception of "A Feast for Crows." It has less pages because it is not a complete book as it focuses on just a handful of characters. The leftover parts of this book have been carried over in "A Dance with Dragons."

So, essentially, "Winds of Winter" is not just a sequel to "A Dance with Dragons" but also to "A Feast for Crows." Hence, it is expected to be over 2,600 pages keeping in mind the increments over the previously published books. However, 2,600 is quite a huge number and the author George R. R. Martin may be asked to cut away a few side tracks in order to keep the length of the book in manageable order.

Hence, it is expected that Martin may need to keep the book "Winds of Winter" around 1,500 pages. To cut down on the length, Martin may need to reduce the chapters and also the coverage of all the key characters.

As most of the major characters are almost in the same location, so the author can focus on the events in the book rather than different chapters on the point of views of the main characters. Also, "Winds of Winter" will have a sad ending, according to Independent
