While speaking with Newsweek, Moffat said that he still does not know whether or not Season 4 will be the last for "Sherlock." After all, anything can happen to the British series since they originally thought that Season 3 would be their last. The network heads then made an announcement that they have been picked up for a fourth season.

Moffat also commented on the rumors that Cumberbatch and his co-star, Martin Freeman, may no longer be interested to return to more seasons of "Sherlock" because of their tight schedules. However, the exec is confident that if Season 5 will be confirmed, both actors would be more than willing to fix their schedule to accommodate the series.

Meanwhile, Cumberbatch previously spoke with British GQ in October where he said that "Sherlock" Season 4 is the end of an era. This has led fans to believe that the current installment is indeed the last for the franchise.

However, Moffat clarified that what readers understood was not what his actor really meant. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, "That is not what Benedict said. That is what someone edited his words into the meaning... We do not know. We have not sat down with the intent to anything yet. But we are always aware that it could be over. But the fact is Benedict did not say that," he said.

In other news, "Sherlock" Season 4 premiered with some major changes. Compared to its first three seasons, the opening and closing scenes from the show looked very different. New heroes and villains are also expected to be introduced in the coming weeks and there are hopes that they will be instrumental in giving the new timeline some sense.

"Sherlock" Season 4 airs Sundays on PBS.
