Fox 'X-Men' TV series confirmed to feature familiar 'X-Men' characters

Executive producers Matt Nix and Ben Wexler attend the premiere of FX's 'The Comedians' at The Broad Stage on April 6, 2015 in Santa Monica, California.

Fox is moving forward with a brand new television series set in the same universe of their "X-Men" films. Series creator and writer Matt Nix has confirmed that while the show will focus on new characters, familiar faces such as members of the X-Men team, will appear.

"Suffice it to say it's a show that contains some characters that fans will be excited about," Nix explained in an interview with CNET. "I can't talk about specifics, but it's not like there are no X-Men in it."

Nix did not confirm which of the X-Men core members would appear in the show. It is also unclear at this point who would portray the iconic characters. They may be portrayed by the same actors in the films or be recast specifically for the show.

It was confirmed that the series would focus on a family in which the parents just discover that their children are mutants. Due to the way the world persecutes mutants, the family goes on the run. Nix states this will give the show a more intimate look at the life of mutants instead of the more outward impression that the X-Men members have.

This plot will also involve the man-made and government-sanctioned Sentinels, Screen Rant reported. Nix confirmed they will be featured in the show, having appeared in "X-Men: Days of Future Past," and will be machine agents going out to hunt down rogue mutants.

Professor Charles Xavier, who has been portrayed by Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy in the films, is also widely speculated to appear in the show. This is particularly because he is in charge of the school for mutants and may appear to aid the family running from the authorities.

No premiere date has yet been announced. A trailer for the most recent "X-Men" film, "X-Men: Apocalypse," can be viewed below:
