The popular 2013 South Korean medical drama "Good Doctor" starring Joo Won and Moon Chae Won will have a remake in the United States. It will air on ABC for a pilot run while Sony Pictures Television will take charge of the production.

David Shore of the hit series "House" will pen the script which will retain the original story. The South Korean drama "Good Doctor" is about the lives of pediatric surgeons as well as the romance between an autistic savant played by Joo Won and his senior played by Moon.

It tackles the question if a person who cannot relate to people has the capability to save lives as the leading male character Park Si On has autism, a disorder that has been widely misunderstood. Park is portrayed as intelligent but does not know how to function under pressure or in social situations.

Moon's character is senior colleague who tries to understand Park. When she volunteered to become his personal guardian, a romance eventually developed.

South Korean drama "Good Doctor" was written by Park Jae Bum. It has received many awards including Best Writer for Jae Bum, Top Excellence Award-Actor for Joo Won, Top Excellence Award-Actress for Moon and Best Couple Award for the two leads.

The U.S. version of "Good Doctor" will formally air in September, according to Yonhap News. It is executive produced by "Hawaii Five-O" star Daniel Dae Kim, Shore, Sebastian Lee and David Kim. Co-executive producing is Erin Gunn of Shore's Shore Z Productions, Deadline reported.

"Good Doctor" brings back Shore to medical dramas after "House," which was about the brilliant doctor Gregory House. It starred Hugh Laurie as Dr. House and ran for eight seasons on Fox. The series was among the most huge medical dramas that aired from Nov. 16, 2004 to May 21, 2012.

Medical drama is a popular genre that involves high-intensity emotions due to the nature of the field's life-and-death scenes. Korean medical dramas are more sensational and come with a usually powerful story. Some hits are SBS' "Doctor Stranger" in 2014, tvN's "Emergency Couple" in 2014 and KBS' "Descendants of the Sun" in 2016.
