'Sword Art Online' game app officially out; Movie and console title also looms

Kirito and Asuna are the two main protagonists in the light novel turned anime, "Sword Art Online."

"Sword Art Online's" massive virtual gaming world has finally reached both Android and iOS devices with its recently released "Memory Defrag" game. Finally, fans can now play the new title while on the go and anytime they want.

The game lets players collect characters that will fight for them within the game. Such game genre has been the current fad among Android and iOS titles and acquiring characters can be done through purchase with the use of memory diamonds.

Memory diamonds can be obtained through accomplishing mission requirements or by in-game purchases using real cash. A playable character in "SOA MD" costs 25 memory diamonds whilst weapons can be bought at 15 memory diamonds, according to Kotaku.

It has to be pointed out though that character collection is random. Nevertheless, game events will be dished out at regular intervals for a higher chance of snagging a preferred character.

Players start off with a three-man party though the chosen characters can only be played one at a time. A character switch can be done with a simple tap on the hero's icon and by doing so allows that character to perform a special attack against an enemy.

As such, players will have to do simple finger swipes or taps on the device in order for the characters to attack, dodge, and parry during battle. Each successful mission will be rewarded with five memory diamonds that can be used for future purchases.

In the interim, the franchise's film adaptation has been teased yet again as a couple of promotional trailers were released just recently. Aniplex's North American branch, on the other hand, detailed the story plot of the upcoming movie as it was cited by Comicbook.

In the year 2026, a new company developed a wearable gaming device that would directly rival Akihiko Kayaba's NerveGear. Unlike the said wearable that utilizes deep dive technology where it is a requisite for gamers to be asleep, the Augma uses augmented reality (AR) where players are wide awake while using it.

The device was a major sell out among gamers as well as the exclusive game that went alongside it - "Ordinal Scale." Asuna has already jumped over to its hype long before Kirito. However, as soon as the latter decided to give it a shot, he soon discovered that the game is not just a game after all.

The film will be released in Japan this Feb. 18 while its U.S. run will only have a one-night screening event on March 9. In the meantime watch a trifecta of clips about "SOA's" new mobile app, its upcoming film, and "Accel World vs SOA" game slated for PS4 and PS Vita:
