Verizon gives free Daydream VR headsets for delayed Google Pixel, Pixel XL shipment

A new Google Pixel XL phone is displayed at the Google pop-up shop in the SoHo neighborhood on October 20, 2016 in New York City.

Verizon customers who ordered a Google Pixel are being treated to free Daydream VR headsets. The treat is the carrier's way of apologizing for the delayed shipping of the Android Nougat smartphones.

Google unveiled the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones in late 2016 but there has been a backlog of orders as production was not able to keep up. Now, some customers who ordered the smartphones are still not receiving the device.

Verizon representatives are calling their customers who are waiting for the Google Pixel and Pixel XL delivery and are offering free Daydream View VR headsets for the shipment delay, XDA Developers has learned. The representatives do not ask for personal information and they know the activation date for the customers' device which means that it is not a hoax or a phishing campaign.

Google Pixel and the Pixel Xl are two of the most popular smartphones from 2016. It is the search engine giant's new line of updated Android smartphones, effectively phasing out their previous run of the Nexus products. The phones are often compared with the Galaxy S7 Edge, the LG V20 and even the iPhone 7 from Apple.

Verizon customers who missed the representative's call regarding their Google Pixel or Pixel XL orders can still claim their free Daydream View VR headsets by calling (844) 340-4325, The Next Web reported. For those who already have the VR headset will be offered $50 in Play Store credit which is not a bad offer for those looking for additional in-game purchases or premium apps.

Google has already given free $50 cards for those who directly ordered from them in October 2016. The high demand for the Google Pixel and Pixel XL led to the shipment delays.

Verizon sells the Google Pixel XL for the retail price of $770 or $32 per month and the Pixel for $650 or $27 a month. The Daydream View VR headset costs $80.
