'Overwatch' Director Jeff Kaplan: Mexican-themed Dorado map based on Italy

'Overwatch' is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment.

"Overwatch" Director Jeff Kaplan discussed the game during a half-hour talk in the recently concluded DICE summit. Primarily, how Blizzard used Manarola, an Italian city, as a reference for the Mexican-themed map Dorado.

According to Game Spot, Kaplan gave an explanation about the decision by saying that the Mexican cities known by Blizzard such as Tijuana and Mexico City, did not match what they were looking for. Basically, they envisioned an open, coastal city with hills and lots of colors, which the Dorado map is known for.

Kaplan even went so far as to say that his team went to Google Images and searched for a "colorful Mexican town." They did not even look at the pictures in depth, but just looking at the thumbnail, but he remarked that they found the exact version of Mexico they wanted to build in one of them.

He even said that the image fit exactly the graybox blockout of the map they made, and it was gorgeous coastal, seaside town. After two months of the map's completion, Kaplan said that an unspecified person pointed out the fact about Manarola as their reference for Dorado.

Kaplan's point in pointing out the mistake was that they want to portray the world they hoped it would be, rather than the reality. He followed up with a joke, saying that the developers will use a Mexican city as a reference for a possible Italian-themed map in the future.

According to Game Rant, Blizzard has not yet confirmed anything about a new map, as they are more focused on releasing a new hero first. After all, the company recently teased a possible new addition to the "Overwatch" roster, the young robotics expert Efi Oladele.

It could be possible that the new map will be related to Oladele, but without any confirmation from developers, everything is speculation at this point. The next map might even be for Doomfist, if Blizzard so chooses.

"Overwatch" is now available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Here is the latest video for the game:
