‘Marvel’s Inhumans’ plot: Leader Black Bolt can’t speak; Uses sign language throughout show

Marvel's Inhumans originally fought the X-Men in the comics.

ABC is bringing "Marvel's Inhumans" to life and the show's first official teaser and promotional material has been released.

If you don't already know who the Inhumans are, they are a race of super-beings who have undergone "terrigenesis" - a transformative process that unlocks powerful gifts. In the comic books, the Kree race is responsible for the creation of the Inhumans in an attempt to create an army of soldiers; however, the experiment was abandoned due to a prophecy that suggested that the Inhumans would destroy the Kree people.

"Marvel's Inhumans" has a stellar cast list, which includes Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal and Iwan Rheon as Maximus, Empire Online reported.

The show is helmed by showrunner Scott Buck, who described the project as an "exciting proposition" due to its many challenges such as the effects-heavy character Medusa and the purely CGI dog Lockjaw. Like most superhero shows, Buck's approach to "Inhumans" is not to overwhelm viewers with action and out-of-this-world superpowers, but to make the characters as human as possible.

"We approach these [characters] all as real people who just happen to have these abilities, so they're all very grounded," Buck told EW.

The Inhumans are led by Black Bolt who, interestingly, does not speak. Despite this, he is the show's hero and lead, which makes him all the more interesting. Throughout the show, Bolt will use sign language and choosing his words carefully as he speaks.

Buck made it clear that "Inhumans" is not a spinoff to "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." but said it is inevitable for the event in the latter to affect "Inhumans." Nevertheless, Buck assures fans that "Inhumans" is a show intended to stand on its own.

Interestingly, "Inhumans" was shot entirely with IMAX digital cameras and is the first Marvel series to premiere its first-two episodes on IMAX cinemas prior to the show's debut in ABC this fall. Buck teased that the first two episodes "feel like a movie" because working with IMAX allowed them more freedom to work on the material.

"Marvel's Inhumans" will premiere in IMAX theaters on Sept. 1.
