BTS Talks About Second Grammy Nomination And Invisible Barrier For K-Pop Artists

BTS's oldest member, singer RM, reflected on the K-pop band's massive year during a global press conference held recently at LA's SoFi Stadium.

RM, who is often considered the leader of BTS, expressed great delight that the group had landed their second Grammy nomination as well as for winning the "Artist of the Year" at the 2021 American Music Awards that were held on November 21.

He said that though BTS had countless awards and shows, the AMA and Grammy nod really meant something for them. The singer, whose real name is Kim Nam-Joon, added that as artists, the Bangtan Boys started out in Korea, but limitations of their genre, identity, and language were like invisible walls for Korean artists.

The remark was seen as a reference to BTS's failure to win a nomination for one of the four top categories, despite their stupendous success this year and producing back-to-back Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers.

BTS member Suga also talked about the two Grammy nominations, saying that he understands that winning a Grammy isn't easy. The seven-member group was BTS was nominated in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category at the 2021 Grammys but didn't win. This year too the fans have won a nomination in the same category for the upcoming 2022 Grammys.

However, fans were disappointed on hearing their idols were nominated in just one category, as they had anticipated more nominations. However, according to Suga, the band felt excited and continues to feel surreal about the Grammy nomination.

He said that the septet grew up watching the Grammys. Being nominated for a Grammy and getting the final win is not easy. Suga added that he is thankful that there are still challenges and barriers BTS can try to work to overcome. The group hopes that they can overcome them.

Meanwhile, the boys were filming for "The Late Late Night Show with James Corden", when the nominations were announced. The band released a Bangtan Bomb video last week, which showed their reaction to getting a Grammy nomination.

All the seven members of the iconic band jumped up with a loud cheer when the group was announced in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category.

Jimin and J-Hope were seen breaking into an impromptu dance, Suga pointed out that they were pitted against really strong contenders. The other nominees in this category include Coldplay for "Higher Power", Doja Cat Featuring SZA for "Kiss Me", Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco for "Lonely", and Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga for "I Get A Kick Out Of You".
