When Nintendo announced that they are partnering with DeNA mobile games to launch their first party titles on smartphones and tablets, most assumed that they were being cornered with no other options to go for.

The phenomenal growth that the smartphone industry witnessed made a lot of companies change their mind and try their hands in creating games for them. Even big players like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts created tablet specific titles or added add-on apps that helped make their games better.

For many years, Nintendo had their Mario Bros, Zelda and Donkey Kong on their proprietary platforms. It is about to change soon according to a recent announcement. However, Satoru Iwata, president of the company said that it is not because they are forced to enter the smartphone industry.

"We are not a company that has been cornered to the edge and looking for ways to survive. What we are doing now is adapting our policies to sync with the ever changing world and stay ahead of the competition," said Iwata during a press meet held in Japan.

He also added that the company choose DeNA as their partner because they specialized in many areas that Nintendo is unaware of. The company received proposals from many to partner with them and launch mobile games but they choose DeNA based on a variety of factors, Game Spot reported.

When the media opined that Nintendo has entered the smartphone market late, Iwata said, "Time is never a constraint if what we offer is good enough to gamers. Based on the titles we release in the coming years, it can be decided whether we are late to the platform or not."

The President of Nintendo added that the upcoming NX console will be a pleasant surprise for gamers and will definitely change the way people view this form of entertainment, according to IGN.
