The biggest problem that mankind will be facing in the future is the sustainable production and ecological consumption of energy, according to Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk.

Musk appeared on astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson's "StarTalk Radio" show in March, and pointed out the seriousness of the energy problem in our present time.

"From a terrestrial standpoint, the biggest problem we need to solve on Earth this century is sustainable production and consumption of energy," Musk explained during the show. "This really is quite a serious problem. People really should take this quite seriously."

About 90 percent of the United States transportation industry is oil-dependent. Oil supply is getting scarce but the society's habit of usage does not show any concern.

Musk explained that changing the chemical composition of the atmosphere and oceans by increasing large amounts of carbon dioxide which were buried since the pre Cambrian era is not a very sane experiment.

The Tesla CEO explained that sooner or later, the world will run out of oil if the society does not come up with a resolution to burning oil for transport. Economy will eventually breakdown and it will be the end of the civilization, according to Tesla & SpaceX.

This is a situation that Musk is dedicating his time to help solve. As CEO of Tesla Motors, Musk came up with a concept of an electric car that made it sexy again.

While the company’s electric cars are not totally the answer to the energy crisis at present since it still runs on coal, Musk pointed out that the need for sustainable power from wind and solar is necessary.
