Bruce Jenner in his "20/20" interview with Diane Sawyer

"I am a woman" was just one of several bombshells Bruce Jenner dropped on Friday. Besides sharing his transgender status during the 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer, Jenner also admitted that he is a Republican on the "conservative side."

The revelations were made after Sawyer mentioned that in January 2015 Obama became the first United States president to use the word "transgender" during a State of the Union address.  Jenner said that he would give him approval for that.

However, Jenner then explained that he has never been  a "big fan" of Obama. After Sawyer asked Jenner if he was a Republican, he replied that he is, and "believes" in the U.S. Constitution.

Sawyer asked Jenner if his being a Republican would make some people in the party uneasy. Jenner explained that he had considered that fact, but that both parties could potentially have "understanding."

Afterwards, Sawyer asked if Jenner would ask Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate and House to support the transgender cause. The TV star revealed that he would, and believes they would be "very receptive," according to Business Insider.

Only 18 U.S. states have laws banning job discrimination against people who are transgender. In his State of the Union address Obama has suggested that this situation be changed.

Based on a Gallup poll in July, 63 percent of Americans who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT), are Democrats, while 21 percent are Republican.

There is no solid data about the political affiliations of transgender Americans in particular, according to The Washington Post. That is mainly because only about 5 percent of the LGBT population, and .3 percent of the entire population, defines themselves as transgender.
