"Teenage Mao Zedong" is the first animated movie about China's founding father.

Natives of Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province in south-central China, had a chance to take a look at Chairman Mao Zedong's youthful days as the animated movie "Teenage Mao Zedong" premiered on Sunday.

The film was launched to commemorate the legacy of China's founding father as well as to raise awareness among the youth.

The organizers and creators of the film stated that the movie was first shown in Changsha, as Mao began his political career and worked as a teacher in the province.

The story of the film revolves around the teenage years of Mao, including his desire for freedom and enthusiasm to view the outside world positively.

Film director Lei Junlin stated that the movie's goal is to desanctify Mao, as well as to show that he is also like any typical child who is naughty and likes to play tricks.

The approval of the film from the Chinese government was also a surprise for the director, as in the past it was a taboo to imitate the chairman as a cartoon.

"As the first great leader-themed animated movie in the country, approval for the film came as a surprise. It was a great challenge to animate Chairman Mao while bringing the cartoon characters to life," Lei said.

On the other hand, Feng Yisu, the screenwriter of the film, stated that Mao's youth would be interesting for the modern audience as well as parents because it will give them insight about their children's thinking.

The production of the film costs 30 million yuan ($4.8 million).

"Teenage Mao Zedong" is the first animated movie about a Chinese leader. Its 3D version will be shown on April 30.
