Blake Neely announces on Twitter the progress on the "Supergirl" score.

CBS has made it official: Greg Berlanti's "Supergirl" is part of the network's 2015-2016 primetime television line-up. Playing Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl is "Glee" alum and "Whiplash" star Melissa Benoist. Dean Cain and Helen Slater have earlier been cast to play yet-to-be-announced roles in the series.

"CBS is looking to expand the scope of its drama offerings and break into the superhero genre with a familiar franchise," Variety reported. For his part, Berlanti has two active superhero shows on The CW: "Arrow" and "The Flash."

According to reports, "Supergirl" on CBS will start from the time when Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, stops hiding her superpowers. Dean Cain, who played Superman in the 90s' "Lois & Clark," is one of the most highly anticipated actors in the show.

Helen Slater, who portrayed Supergirl in the 1984 movie of the same name, has been inspiring speculations among DC Comics fans. Interestingly, John Wesley Shipp, who played "The Flash" in the 1990s is now playing as Barry Allen's father in The CW series.

Calista Flockhart ("Ally McBeal") is also in "Supergirl" as Cat Grant. Chyler Leigh ("Grey's Anatomy") is playing Supergirl's/Kara's sister, Alex Danvers. Mehcad Brooks ("Necessary Roughness") is also in as Jimmy Olsen.

Benoist's "Supergirl" costume started making rounds across the various social media sites in March. When it was reported that Cain and Slater are in, the buzz got even louder about Berlanti's new project.

CBS joins The CW, FOX ("Gotham"), NBC ("Constantine"), ABC ("Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and "Agent Carter") in bringing to modern television the characters from the most popular comic book favorites of all time.
