From his role as Roadblock in "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and Hobbs in the hit film "Fast & Furious 7," actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is playing a comic role in new film "Alpha Squad Seven."

Johnson is in collaboration with "San Andreas" producer Beau Flynn in Dreamwork's sci-fi action comedy "Alpha Squad Seven," as per The Hollywood Reporter.

Set in space, "Alpha Squad Seven" is a four-quadrant action-adventure comedy that may present elements similar to "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Armageddon," and "Independence Day."

The film may start a possible franchise and rock fans' interest just like what James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" did last year.

As per Cinema Blend, Johnson starred in three sci-fi films, but none of those were comedic roles. "Doom" was the actor's first sci-fi movie and it followed a team of Marines on a research laboratory on Mars as they respond to an attack from genetically engineered monsters.

Johnson's second sci-fi film was the thriller "Race to Witch Mountain," which was based on "Escape to Witch Mountain," a 1968 novel authored by Alexander Key. The film centered on a Las Vegas taxi driver who helped extraterrestrial youngsters reach their spaceship in Witch Mountain.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" was Johnson's most recent sci-fi action film and it started his team up with producer Beau Flynn. It centered on a teenager and his father as they venture to the South Pacific to rescue its only human inhabitant.

Aside from "Alpha Squad Seven," The Rock will play the role of supervillain Black Adam in action-fantasy film Shazam!"

His other projects include "Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon," "Journey to the Center of the Earth 4," "San Andreas," "Central Intelligence," and "Moana."

Flynn will co-produce the action-comedy film along with Johnson via FlynnPicture Co. and 7 Buck Productions while "The Karated Kid 2" scribes Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer are on board to pen the screenplay.

Since the film is in its early phase of development, exact plot details, cast members, and release date have yet to be revealed. Fans have to wait for further updates.
