Luc Besson to Adapt French Comic ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’

"Furious 7" star Michelle Rodriguez's supermodel ex-girlfriend Cara Delevingne has bagged a sci-fi film titled "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" with "Lucy" director Luc Besson and "The Amazing Spiderman 2" actor Dane DeHaan.

The film is an adaptation of hugely popular French comic book series,"Valerian and Laureline."

The news was announced by Besson, the film's director, writer and producer via Twitter on May 12.

"Starring @danedehaan & @Caradelevingne. Shooting in December. In theatres 2017," wrote the director in his admittedly first series of tweets, along side the picture of lead actors.

In the futuristic movie, Delevingne will be seen playing the role of protagonist's red-haired companion, Laureline, who is a time-travelling agent and will collaborate with a titular character called Valerian, played by DeHaan, to protect the 28th century earth from aliens and neighboring planets.

Deadline reported that the plot will mainly revolve space opera and time travel adventure of the two lead characters, and is expected to be similar to Besson's seminal 1997 pic, "Fifth Element."

Besson is a well-known long time fan of the iconic , novel series from writers Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières that first appeared in 1967. It was rumoured way back in 2012 that the award winning director is fondling with the idea of "Valerian" and might soon come up with a movie on the same lines, TIME reported..

The 56-year-old director also posted a shot of the movie's first logo and announced that the production of the movie is set to begin at year's end. The movie is expected to be ready by the summer of 2017.

The 22-year-old model is evidently transitioning smoothly from modelling to acting. Her first superhero, "Suicide Squad," is still in production and "Paper Town," an adaptation of the novel by John Green, is almost ready to release this summer.
