Walk Score has recently published a study that lists the 154 most bike-friendly cities in the United States. These cities have taken major steps to make bicycling safe and effective for cyclists.

Published in Redfin, the list of the top bicycle friendly cities from the Redfin company ranks cities by using an index ranging from 0 to 100. The top city scored an incredible 81.3 points, while the second-place city racked up six fewer points.

A bike enthusiast already knows that cycling is healthy, eco friendly, and cheap. However, most cities lack the urban infrastructure to make them bicycle friendly.

For decades creators of urban design in some European countries have made a point to create cities that are bike friendly. However, most U.S. cities have not adjusted for such green transportation, according to Utah People's Post.

Making a city's infrastructure cycling friendly also requires changing the public's outlook. That could be achieved through classes about bicycle transportation and urban traffic.

The Bike Score Ranking created by Walk Score considers such issues. Some U.S. cities have been quite effective, making them the most bike friendly cities.

Besides best bike cities such as Sacramento, Denver, and Boston, small towns are also represented on the list. They can also be effective in green urban planning.

The best bicycle cities in America were Minneapolis, Sacramento, Portland, Denver and Boston, respectively. Minneapolis topped the list due to a network of bike lanes and a solid bike commuter culture.

James Garry, a Redfin agent, said in a blog post that biking is central to Minneapolis' healthy lifestyle. It also affects decisions such as where residents will live in the Minnesota metropolis.
