"Destiny" developer Bungie recently announced at the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo that a new expansion pack called "The Taken King" will be released in September, but gamers immediately questioned the developer why it has to release the new content into three different packages depending on its content.
Bungie's new pricing scheme for its expansion packs has generated a lot of frustration from its fan base. Despite offering interesting exclusive in-game contents, some gamers still consider the expansion pack's price tag unfairly expensive.
According to Eurogamer, the "The Taken King" expansion pack alone will cost £39.99, while the core "Destiny" game including the expansion pack will cost £54.99.
But it is the "The Taken King: Collector's Edition" that costs £79.99 that caught everybody's attention. This edition of the "Destiny" expansion pack contains several collectibles, a number of exclusive in-game content, three class specific emotes and exotic weapons that offer XP boosts.
"Destiny" creative director Luke Smith defended the expansion's expensive price tag saying, "Purchasers get a big, rich campaign. Fully voiced cinematics and the story of what happens when an angry alien god wages war on a solar system, all with a satisfying conclusion."
Despite receiving negative criticisms about the expansion pack's price tag, Smith defended it by saying that despite the hefty price tag players will still get their money's worth through exclusive contents, according to VG 24/7.
When interviewed by Eurogamer, Smith defended Bungie's pricing decision by pointing the financial outlay the company requires from its fan base. Smith added that the company still considers its fans feedback. This means that if fans continue to question what they thought is an overly expensive expansion for "Destiny," Bungie might consider lowering the expansion pack's price tag.
