With the new "Spider-Man" film making its debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have finally announced the actor who will play the iconic titular role, "The impossible" star Tom Holland. Also, "Cop Car" director Jon Watts will direct the upcoming film.

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have conducted a wide search for the upcoming film's actor and director for months. According to Marvel, the companies and the film producers were enthralled by Holland's performance in the series of screen tests, as well as his performances in previous films like "The Impossible" and "Wolf Hall."

Aside from the upcoming "Spider-Man," Holland will be seen in Rob Connolly's thriller film "Backcountry," Brendan Muldowney's adventure drama "Pilgrimage," and Ron Howard's action adventure "In the Heart of the Sea."

The decision of the studios is not a big surprise, according to Cinema Blend. Prior to the studios' official announcement, it was reported that Marvel wanted "Boardwalk Empire" actor Charlie Plummer as the iconic titular superhero while Sony eyed on Holland.

Yesterday, Holland posted three videos of him showcasing some "Spider-Man" skills by doing some jumps and flips. This is something that was not done by Holland's co-finalists, including Plummer, "Kill the Messenger" actor Matthew Lintz, and "Red Band Society" actor Charlie Rowe.

Watts is a surprising choice as the film's director, as per Cinema Blend. However, it is assumed that the "Cop Car" director will be able to direct Marvel's film, just like what James Gunn did in "Guardians of the Galaxy."

The iconic "Spider-Man" will be seen by fans first in Joe and Anthony Russo's upcoming "Captain America: Civil War," in which the friendly neighborhood hero will be taking a side between Captain America and Iron Man secondary to the superhero registration act. "Captain America: Civil War" is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2016, while the new "Spider-Man" film is set to hit the big screen on July 28, 2017.
