‘Star Trek Beyond’ Film Update: ‘Pacific Rim’ Actor Idris Elba Reveals Film Plot Details

“Pacific Rim” actor Idris Elba, who will play the film villain in Justin Lin’s “Star Trek Beyond.”

With Justin Lin's "Star Trek Beyond" hitting the big screen next year in celebration of the franchise's 50th anniversary, "Pacific Rim" actor Idris Elba, who will play the film villain, has revealed some details about the upcoming sci-fi film.

In Elba's interview with TV3, the actor said that he will be sharing the screen head to head with Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock. Spock was initially a science officer and first officer in the starship Enterprise. Later, he became the commanding officer of two new models of the starship. He also served as the Federation ambassador, who helped restore the relationship between the Federation and the Klingons.

The Klingons were rumored to be the main antagonist of Lin's upcoming film, as per Cinema Blend. They are characterized as extraterrestrial humanoid warrior species, reflecting traits like viciousness, mercilessness, and egotism.

The rumor delighted the franchise's fans as they have been waiting for it to materialize. While Elba's character was rumored as a Klingon in the early versions of the film script, co-star Simon Pegg confirmed that Elba is not a Klingon.

Aside from Lin's "Star Trek Beyond," Elba will also be seen in Jim O'Hanlon's drama film "A Hundred Streets," Cary Fukunaga's war drama "Beasts of No Nation," James Watkins' action film "Bastille Day," and Harmony Korine's crime thriller "The Trap." The actor will be part of the voice cast in Jon Favreau's live-action Disney film "Jungle Book" and in Andre Stanton and Angus MacLane's "Finding Dory."

"Star Trek Beyond" serves as the sequel to J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek Into Darkness" and acts as the thirteenth film o the "Star Trek" franchise. Along with Elba, Quinto, and Pegg, "Star Trek Beyond" stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, and Sofia Boutella, among others.

Lin's "Star Trek Beyond" is slated to premiere in theaters on July 8, 2016.
