In its opening weekend, "Despicable Me" spin-off "Minions" has managed to top the charts, becoming the second-biggest debut of an animated movie.

Garnering the total sales of $115.2 million in U.S., the movie has beaten all the "Toy" series movies and is now second only to "Shrek the Third," which opened with $121.6 million in 2007. With the successful weekend, "Minions" is only the fourth animated film ever to make more than $100 million in its first week.

The movie has brought the sidekick of "Despicable Me" movies in the spot light as the yellow, pill-shaped babbling servants are now looking for a new master. They are voiced by Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm, along with the movie's director, Peter Coffin.

"Minions" is emerging as worldwide hit, taking the No. 1 spot in 29 of the 30 other countries, in which it debuted over the weekend, including Mexico, Russia, France and Venezuela. Internationally, the movie has earned $280.5 million so far, Variety reported.

The movie is about the yellow furry jobless organisms, who otherwise always find themselves working under world villains. When they don't have a master, they start falling into deep depression. To save his race, Kevin, along with his friend Stuart and Bob, embarks on a journey to find an evil master for themselves, when they stumble upon Scarlet Overkill, the super-villainess.

The army of adorable yellow characters has managed to push back "Jurassic World" and "Inside Out" to second and third level respectively at the box office. Also, it is the best opening yet for the hugely successful "Despicable Me" franchise. While 2010 "Despicable Me" opened with $56.4 million, its sequel, 2013's "Despicable Me 2" opened with $83.5 million.

"Despicable Me 3" is expected to hit theatres in the summer of 2017, The Sacramento Bee reported.
