Twitter Ditches 140-Character Cap When Sending Direct Messages

Twitter is officially ending the 140-character limit of direct messages send through mobile and desktop apps, and the Web

Twitter, the second largest social networking site in terms of users, recently announced that it is making major changes in the way its users can send messages. While public tweets are only limited to 140 characters, the company said that it is removing that character cap when sending direct messages.

The changes rolls out on Aug. 12. Twitter product manager Sachin Agarwal announced the change via a blog post saying, "Today's change is another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun."

Twitter said that the 140-character limit on public posts will remain and the change will only affect private messages that are sent directly to a user. The company first showed signs of changing the private messaging feature in June, according to Fortune.

The change was already rolled out to Twitter app in the iOS and Android platform, TweetDeck as well as the desktop and Mac version. There is no exact detail as to which region will get the new feature first. However, Twitter assured its users all over the world that the change will be delivered within the next few weeks.

Additionally, Twitter also clarified that the 140-character cap will still apply when receiving and sending Direct Messages via SMS.

Social networking sites have been busy making drastic changes in their services in order to cope up with the fast changing world of social media. Facebook announced in Aug. 5 a new messaging feature that allows businesses to send messages to users. Twitter, in June, announced its entry into the e-commerce industry after the introduction of the Buy button into its website.
