An NIH health study shows reducing fat in one's diet results in more fat loss than cutting carbohydrates. After closely examining the subjects' food, exercise, and breathing, researchers discovered that both diets resulted in fat reductionwhen calories were cut, but decreasing fat intake burned more flab.
The study was conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Its findings were published in the journal Cell Metabolism.
During the study 19 obese people were first given 2,700 calories per day. Then during the next two weeks their diets' caloric intake was reduced one-third either by lowering carbs or fat.
Scientists examined how much oxygen and carbon dioxide the subjects breathed out. They also measured the quantity of nitrogen in their urine.
After six days the results showed that the participants who lowered their fat intake shed 463g of body fat on average. That was 80 percent higher than the carb-cutters who lost an average 245g, according to BBC.
Many experts have argued that lowering carbs in one's diet is the best way tbo lose weight and a big belly. The reason is that it changes a person's metabolism.
Their theory is that carb reduction results in lower blood sugar levels. That causes the human body to release fat it is storing.
Lead Researcher Dr. Kevin Hall explained that lowering carbohydrate intake can indeed help someone lose body fat. However, cutting fat burns more.
This results from a greater difference in the fat eaten-fat burned ratio, according to Pioneer News. The low-carb diet only increased the rate of fat-burning.
In terms of metabolism, it is not logical to choose a low-carbohydrate diet. However, Hall explained that real-world diets are less controlled. Thus, it is possible that people could experience more weight loss by lowering their carb intake.
Doctors Sai Das and Susan Roberts wrote the study's commentary. They noted that debates on diets cause major controversy.
The physicians judged that the long-term effects of a low-carb diet were unclear. However, eating certain carbohydrates such as whole grains is certainly healthy.
Health experts explain that the best diets for weight loss are not ones that cut calories through fat or carbs. They are ones people can stick to.
