The upcoming "Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will revert back to its root by following its format from the first few seasons.

According to executive producer Shonda Rhimes, the upcoming installment will serve as a fresh start, not only for the characters and actors, but also for the writers.

Cast member Jason George spoke with People about the upcoming season and he said that season 12 almost seems like the rebirth of "Grey's Anatomy."

Following season 11's highly-emotional episodes, season 12 promises to be lighter in tone. George added that there will also be a lot of hook ups between the characters, including those who are not in a relationship.

In the first few seasons of "Grey's Anatomy," the characters were known for hooking up with one another. In fact, even Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd knew each other from a random hook up that resulted in the two developing feelings for each other.

After Derek's death in season 11, fans of "Grey's Anatomy" are expecting big things for the show. This is why Rhimes and the writers decided to go back to its roots, according to Christian Post.

This move could work both ways for the hit ABC series. For one, reverting back to the old format could mean that exciting things can happen on "Grey's Anatomy." On the other hand, this could also mean that some fans might find the upcoming installment boring.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will also focus on Meredith and how she will survive as a single woman. The season will also introduce a slew of new characters.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will premiere on ABC on Sept. 24.
