Zheng Saisai has advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open.

Rising Chinese star Zheng Saisai, together with her playing partner Vania King from the U.S., has advanced into the second round of the U.S. Open after knocking out the tandem of Chinese player Xu Yifan and Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's Chan Chin-Wei and her partner have bounced early from the tournament after going down to no. 5 seeds French Caroline Garcia and Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik in straight sets.

Madison Keys of the U.S., on the other hand, has snatched her second round meeting with Tereza Smitkova, 6-1 and 6-2, in women's singles.

Serena Williams, a three-time defending champion, struggled earlier in the tournament but managed to advance closer to completing a calendar Grand Slam after emerging victorious against Kiki Bertens at 7-6,6-3.

The win was Williams's 30th consecutive victory in Grand Slam matches and her 50th match victory of the year.

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard also appeared to be shaking off some of her early troubles this season after advancing into the third round of the tournament, beating Slovenia's Polona Herzog in a three-set match.

On the men's category, defending champion Marin Cilic advanced to the U.S. Open's third round after winning straight sets against Evgeny Donskoy. He will next face either Mikhail Kukushkin or Grigor Dimitrov.

Also advancing is the two-time U.S Open semi-finalist David Ferrer after beating Filip Krajinovic in a three-set affair. His next match will be against French Jeremy Chardy.

Spain's Roberto Bautista-Agut and Feliciano Lopez also made it through.

Countryman Fernando Verdasco meanwhile went down to Canadian Milos Raonic.
