Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia.

In a span of four years, over 200,000 Syrians have died from the jaws of armed conflict that has continually overwhelmed a large part of Syria. The lives of other 11 million Syrians are also at stake as they have forcefully moved from their homes in search of sanctuary.

The conflict started as anti-government protests which overgrew their limits into violence. At the outset, pre-democracy protests vented in March 2011 in the south of the country after teenagers were arrested and tortured following their acts of painting catchphrases on a school wall, BBC confirmed.

As of July 2011, most people started taking to the streets of Syria. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians protested as the opposition supporters took arms and expelled security forces from their localities.

In June 2013, 90,000 people had lost their lives. The number continued to upsurge till it doubled in August 2014 reaching to a tune of 191,000 deaths. As of March 2015, the number had ultimately reached 220,000.

The incidence merited the attention of the international community where some of these incidences were perceived as war crimes. A UN commission of inquiry was set up to investigate the alleged human rights abuses since 2011 which yielded to a decision of ending the indiscriminate employment of weapons.

In August 2013, there were claims of massive chemical weapon killings which triggered the international community to suspect that the Syrian government was involved. After a year, the Syrian government had withdrawn all such weaponry with the fear of international community intervention.

As 4 million people fled Syria in 2013, Syrian conditions worsened into inviting a serious humanitarian crisis, according to Mercy Corps.

Neighboring countries like Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan were already in a struggle to accommodate the Syrian refugees.

According to UN, an additional 7.6 million Syrians have been internally displaced up to date getting a massive 11 million in number, of those who have fled their homes. The Economic loss also as reported in March 2015, was at a whopping $202 billion with additional exertions as rising poverty all over Syria.

Since its inception, armed rebellion in Syria has grown massively attracting the rise of jihadists and other groups. For instance, one of the largest extremist group, Islamic State (IS) is believed to have grown from al-Qaeda and controls territories in eastern and southern Syria.

Rebel groups continue to rival for supremacy as the political arena stands deeply divided. The rebels recurrently capture Syrian government property. Not long ago, rebels have been reported to capture key Idlib air base.

The international community has grown to notice the stalemate in Syria and is currently taking military aid to the country. The fate of Syria remains unknown.
