‘Scandal’ Season 5 Updates: The Gladiators Return, Olivia Pope & Fitzgerald Grant Go Public On Their Love

Actress Kerry Washington (C) and the cast and crew of "Scandal" accept the award for outstanding drama series during the 45th NAACP Image Awards in Pasadena, California February 22, 2014.

After two seasons of "Scandal" spiraled out of control, the show is going back to what made it successful even as Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and President Fitzgerald Grant decide to go public with their romance.

"Scandal" season 5 is eminent and fans have the pleasure to see gladiators in action handling murders and infidelity, running campaigns, and renegade forces.

As the beginning of season 4, Abby Whelan (Darby Stanchfield) left the firm to work at the White House while other associates engage in the campaign for the president's reelection, which already established a different tone for the group. When Pope was kidnapped, the team worked independently and would have to deal with her recovery for the second half of season 4.

In an interview with TV Line, Shonda Rhimes informed the publication to get ready for a "reconstitution" of OPA in season 5 when the gladiators will be back in action and a more focused part of the plot.

Meanwhile, season 4 appeared rocky for the reunited Pope and Fitzgerald who have eventually decided to tell the world about their love. For the past four seasons the two love birds have kept their relationship a secret, which is rational since Fitzgerald is currently married to Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young), and at the same time Pope is not in the business of going out with Presidents, Hypable reported.

The perspective of secrecy is set to change in season 5 as characters say it is enough and come clean about their feelings for one another.

Rhimes pointed out that he was motivated by the idea of what will happen if everything changed for the upcoming season. However, season 5 sees Pope changed after she underwent a period of healing to allow her relationship with Fitzgerald to come to surface.

The showrunner said, "When we last saw her, she was standing on the balcony, and Fitz says to her, 'What happens now?' and she says, 'Whatever we want.' It's a big 'whatever we want."

"Scandal" airs on Sept. 24, Thursday on ABC at 9 p.m.
