Oculus Launches $99 Samsung Gear VR

Oculus will release the Samsung Gear VR for only $99.

Virtual reality company Oculus is making the market more competitive after it announced that it is planning to release a new gear for only $99.  The virtual reality gear, called Samsung Gear VR, will be released in November.

Oculus, which is a Facebook owned company, is teaming up with South Korean tech giant Samsung in developing the virtual reality gear. Despite its interestingly low price, the Samsung Gear VR has one catch. As the name suggests, the gear will only work with Samsung's flagship devices like the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, Note 5 and Note 4.

Enthusiasts who wants to get their hands on the gear and use it on their personal computers will be out of luck.

Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said during the company's developer conference, "With mobile VR, you only need a great game device and a smartphone."

However, for many analysts, the release of an affordable virtual reality gear is more than just for the profits. According to Komando, the gear has the potential to increase the mass' awareness of virtual reality devices and therefore increase its demand.

According to CNet, Oculus is also launching the Oculus Arcade which will allow users to play classic games like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Pac-Mac" on virtual reality. There are also reports claiming that the Gear VR will support Netflix which will allow users to watch movies almost anywhere at their own convenience.

For many tech analysts, virtual reality has a big potential as the market of the future. Many tech giants such as Facebook, Google and Samsung have all jumped into the bandwagon in hopes of jumpstarting what many consider as the next frontier of the tech community.
