OTA Android 5.1 Lollipop Update For Sony Xperia M2, M2 Aqua Begins Rolling Out: 4 Things To Expect

Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

The Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua is now live, Sony announced, adding that the over-the-air (OTA) has already commenced. As the usual case, the firmware jump is "a phased process," meaning the update delivery will be gradual.

The Lollipop OTA update should be automatic for most users of the compatible Xperia handsets but it can be manually triggered by following this course: Settings > About phone > System updates > Check for update. It is estimated that the software download will weigh an average of 500MB for most users so to speed up the process it's best to update via Wi-Fi connection, which will also avoid data charges, Android Geek said.

As mentioned by Sony on its blog announcement, it is a phased rollout so the arrival will greatly depend on location, telco provider and specific models. One thing to remember when updating: the device needs to have battery juice of no less than 50% but a battery pumped to 100% is preferred.

The jump to the latest Lollipop version will result to the following as listed by Sony:

Look and feel inspired by Material Design

With Android 5.1, the Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua get even closer to the look and feel that Google has introduced with Material Design. It's all about "vivid colors, fluid transitions, floating elements and realistic 3D effects and shadows," Android Geek said.

Better customization

Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua users will find that the software upgrade will give them greater access to the devices settings that translates to personalized reconfigurations of alert notices and sound volume.

Increased productivity

The Xperia handsets are also more geared for productivity with Android 5.1 Lollipop as Sony deeply integrated LinkedIn with local calendar entries.

SmartWear integration

The software update also delivers better interaction between Xperia devices and Sony's wearables - the SmartWear. With Android 5.1, users can use the SmartWatch 3, for instance, as a remote shutter button that will make selfie taking more enjoyable.

Most importantly, the Sony Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua on Android 5.1 Lollipop will swath the bugs of the previous OS version and significantly boost performance.
