Matt Damon plays Mark Watney in Ridley Scott's "The Martian."

Director Ridley Scott's space sci-fi film "The Martian" has made and estimated domestic gross of $18 million at the North American box office on Oct. 2.

According to Los Angeles Times, Scott's film is close to reaching between $45 million and $55 million, which was the film's projected gross in its opening weekend. The publication added that "The Martian" had a budget of $108 million and is currently in 3,831 theaters.

Scott's "The Martian" has gotten a rating of 94 percent, according to a film review website Rotten Tomatoes. This clearly indicates that both the audience and the critics gave a positive response to the space sci-fi film. In addition, market research firm CinemaScore gave Scott's "The Martian" a grade of A.

"The Martian" managed to top Genndy Tartakovsky's animated comedy film "Hotel Transylvania 2," which nabbed the highest spot in the box office last week. On Oct. 2, the animated film got an additional $7.5 million to its total gross.

Meanwhile, "The Martian" follows the astronaut Mark Watney as he gets stranded on Mars following a windstorm. The incident prompts the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) team to make a move to save Watney. The film stars Michael Peña, Sebastian Stan, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis, Sean Bean, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain, and Damon as Watney.

Along with Scott directing the film, Goddard is on board to pen the script of the film. Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood, Mark Huffam, and Michael Schaefer are set to co-produce the film.

Directed by Scott, "The Martian" is now showing in theaters. Watch the trailer here:
