Samsung Galaxy S3 will receive the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS update soon. The handset is still running on Android 4.4.4 KitKat and many of the mid-range devices under the hood of Samsung are already running on this version of operating system.
All the major network carriers like AT&T, Verizon, US Cellular, T-Mobile, and Sprint are expected to get this update. This also implies to the fact that Samsung Galaxy S3 will skip the Android Lollipop versions 5.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2, and 5.1, and jump directly onto Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
Android 5.1.1 Lollipop will fix the recurring issue of the Stage fright bug entirely in the device. The integration of LinkedIn app will take place with Contacts and the Calendar app, according to BGR.
The accuracy in superior auto mode will be improved. Material design will receive an enhancement. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi options will now be available in the drop down shortcut menu on the home screen. New icons will also be added.

For the over the air update, the users will be prompted as and when their mobile carrier will receive the update. When prompted on the screen, click on the "Install now" option to install the update immediately. There will be a few more steps after that to complete the process of installation.
In order to manually check for updates, go to Settings > About phone > System update > Check for updates.
The device must be at least half charged and connected to a stable Wi-Fi connection for fast installation.
