YouTuber JerryRigEverything subjected the Nexus 6P to a torture test, ranging from scratching the body to burning then bending it. The 3-minute, 40-second torture test, which has become viral with almost 350,000 hits in one day, showed the smartphone bend at 2:55.
When he applied heat, the phone turned white, instead of black as most mobile units do. When he turned on the Nexus phone, the white line remained although it remained functional. At 2:55, JerryRigEveything started to bend the 6p and at 3:03, the gadget broke into two.
Despite the video, Android Police believes Nexus 6p would not suffer a bendgate scandal as what happened to Apple's iPhone in 2014. The tech website points out that while it shows the phone fold in "half like a piece of wet cardboard," the video misrepresents the Nexus 6p's build-quality.
The website says what happened to the phone prior to the bend test should make the viewer skeptical since the glass, which was heated first, is a vital structural component of the phone. Android Police explains that a big sheet of strengthened glass adds to the structural integrity of a car which is similar to a smartphone's screen.
By damaging the Gorilla Glass panel of the Google Nexus 6p, it is just like bending an aluminum sheet which is easy to do. The website notes that the heat and crack compromised the frame's strength and made it easy to bend. The heat also likely loosened the adhesive that holds the screen in place.
However, when other YouTubers tried to bend an unabused Nexus 6p, Android Police stresses that the torture test shows a sturdy phone.
But JerryRigEverything insists that even if there is a crack in the glass, because it is glued to the LCD, "the structure of the unit is still intact." He adds that if the glass is what compromised the phone's structural integrity, it should have bent along the crack rather than right above the battery.
JerryRigEverything says that he is not a fan of any device or OS, and he conducts torture tests "with the same amount of prejudice for all devices." He concludes that he is willing to repeat the test or any phone that Huawei or Google would send him.
