Shanghai Metro users with mobile phones will be able to report service problems and crimes soon through a smartphone application called "Metro Safety," said the Shanghai Shentong Metro Co. Group.

The app will be available for download on Monday. It was developed to increase public awareness and vigilance in the city's underground railway network, said the Metro operator.

Throughout December, the first 1,500 users to download the app will be chosen to participate in the trial period for the program. Those who download after will have to wait until 2015 to be involved.

If Metro users spot and observe a misdemeanor, crime or issue with the Metro's service, they can input and send the details through the app, which will notify a police officer or Metro official nearest to the sender.

Users of the Metro Safety app will be awarded with "snooper points," which can be exchanged for various products and services, according to the operator.

The trial for the new app will be held on Line 13 of the Metro and will run for a whole month starting this December.

Users will be able to download the Metro app starting Monday from the Google Play app store for Android users and the Apple app store for iPhone users. The app can also be downloaded from the official site of the Shanghai metro, shmetro.com

Shanghai citizens will also be getting another smartphone app for drivers as the city announced that it will be developing an app to help drivers find parking spaces.
