The release date of "Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair" was recently announced by the games' developer XSEED Games. The game will hit the PlayStation 4 platform on Dec. 8 alongside "Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders from Planet Space," which is intended for the PlayStation Vita console.

The "Earth Defense 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair" was based on the "Earth Defense Force 2025," according to IGN. The new game will feature a steady 60 frames per second frame rate and 1080p video resolution. The game's developer XSEED Games promised that the new game will feature fresh contents.

According to Hardcore Gamer, "Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders from Space" for the PlayStation Vita will cost $29.99 while the "Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair" for the PlayStation 4 will cost $49.99.

Both "Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders from Space" and the "Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair" are available for digital download and physical copy. Both games are scheduled to be released in Europe sometime in 2016.

The "Earth Defense Fore" franchise is a series of third-person, tactical role-playing video game. Since the game's first inception in 2003, its development has been handled by three different studios, which are Sandlot, thinkArts and Vicious Cycle Software.

Despite its mixed critical reviews and minimal mainstream appeal, the series has created a devoted cult following. The games' main appeal is its detailed pick-up-and-play gameplay style. In all the games, players assume the role of an "Earth Defense Force" soldier who must protect the planet during an alien invasion.
