Chinese netizens turn the Baijiu drinking game into a social media phenomenon.

The drinking game that has gone viral is about finding out who has the most capacity and tolerance when it comes to chugging down bottle after bottle of a Chinese alcoholic drink.

The game became viral after an unidentified young man chugged 500 milliliters of Baijiu in just around 10 seconds on Saturday, Dec. 20. Baijiu is a kind of commonly found white wine that contains around 40 to 60-percent alcohol. The game was obviously named after the drink of choice.

The instigator of the game claims to have drunk with voracity not to challenge anyone or to start a game, but simply because he was late for a party and is catching up with the intoxication. However, media reports that a challenger came forward the next day beating the feat by drinking double the volume of Baijiu.

The Yangtze Evening Post reports the 30-year-old online business owner from Pexian county, Jiangsu Province, posting the challenge on an online forum.

Several people rose up to the challenge and a series of videos involving different people came up online. Videos show the participants gulping down up to three liters of the drink in one sitting one after the other. Not only did the volume consumed increase, the alcohol content too, said the report.

Interviewed participants admitted to throwing up the liquor after the videos were made.

Despite the entertainment value the game provides for most viewers, some concerned netizens are calling for a stop on the game due to health and safety reasons. Healthcare professionals warn participants and the public that drinking liquor in this amount and manner is dangerous and can be fatal.
