Japanese brands including Toyota among the winners of 2016 safest cars

The "Top Safety Pick Plus," a ranking of safest vehicles, named the safest 2016 model vehicles, wherein Japanese vehicle brands top the ranking.

According to Insurance Institute for High Way Safety, 48 vehicles got "Top Safety Pick Plus" highest ratings. Japanese brands including Toyota, Honda and Subaru win most of the ratings with 23 winners combined, while Volkswagen and Audi got seven winners, Chicago Tribune reported.

In addition, Hyundai, Volvo and Mazda had their won multiple winners while the Chrysler 200, a domestic car, got designation like what happened from the last year's rating, the report said.

Some qualifications include a top score in all five in the crash tests to get into the "Top Safety Pick Plus." Moreover, winners should give systems of front cash-prevention automatic braking in advance, the report added.

According to the institute to compete for the prize, vehicles included automatic braking, the report said. These include Toyota Avalon and Nissan Maxima.

Insurance Institute for High Way Safety president Adrian Lund said that they stiffened requirements and tougher criteria for the ratings so that automakers would make more progress and so other automakers would follow their examples, the report added.

Lund has asked automakers to give their best to qualify, IIHS Highways Loss Data Safety reported. "We asked auto manufacturers to do more this year to qualify for our safety awards, and they delivered."

Lund also said that those brands which did not qualify would not need to worry about their vehicles being unsafe. "As vehicles continue to improve, however, we think it's important to recognize that progress and encourage further advances by making our ratings more stringent," Lund said in the IIHS Highways Loss Data Safety report.
