Whitney Houston

Lifetime's biopic of Whitney Houston gained criticism from fans, NJ.com reported.

Yaya DaCosta who portrayed as Houston in the biopic was highly praised for imitating the iconic singer well but the sex scenes with her husband Bobby Brown played by Arlen Escarta was heavily criticized.

Some Twitter users expressed that the movie showed more sex scenes rather than singing. Social media user @jpnt17 observed that in less than an hour, there were already three lovemaking scenes.

Aside from fans, celebrities also shared their views on the biopic. Sherri Shepherd made fun of the sex scenes by asking how Houston's wig stayed in place during the act.

Some reviews about the film also pointed out that they were able to discover more about Brown rather than Houston.

Aside from the spotlight on Brown, the biopic reportedly suggested that the romance rumors between Houston and Eddie Murphy is somewhat true. It showed a clip of Murphy congratulating the "I Will Always Love You" singer in a flirtatious manner and even asked her for a kiss. The video made Brown jealous, according to MTV.

In the midst of criticisms, director Angela Bassett discussed the concept of the biopic. Bassett said that the film focused on the five-year journey of Houston that started from 1989 when she met her husband at the Soul Train Awards.

The director highlighted the couple's relationship including their success and sweet stories rather than Houston's tragic death.

In 2012, Houston was found dead in a hotel bath tub and authorities declared that she passed away due to drowning, heart failure and cocaine use.

Bassett revealed that she did not want to break hearts by featuring Houston's premature demise. The director said that viewers are treated to a peek but there is no full discussion about the matter.

The film mostly tackled the life of Houston during happier days. Although it depicted the drug use of the singer, Bassett wanted the film to be more of an inspiration that the audience can relate to.

For fans who missed the biopic, Lifetime will air "Whitney" again at 8 PM on Jan.19.
