‘Point Break’: Can Ericson Core’s Iteration Overrun Its 1991 Original?

Ericson Core’s “Point Break” hit theaters on Dec. 25.

Ericson Core's sports crime film remake "Point Break" may not surpass its 1991 predecessor, as evidenced by its current gross, reviews, and ratings.

According to Escapist Magazine, Core's "Point Break" was not that good overall, though it unleashed a small level of charm that could help provide the reason behind its cult classic status through the years following the release of Kathryn Bigelow's original film of the same title.

The film's earnings is pointed out as the primary reason why classic 1991 hit was remade. The orignal "Point Break" film reportedly "holds up" and served as an inspiration for the creation of the "Fast and Furious" film. The former featured surfers, which were replaced by sizzling wheels by the latter.

Following its release on Dec. 25, Friday, in 2,910 theaters, Core's "Point Break" grossed more than $10 million in the United States and more than $43 million in other countries, for a total of more than $53 million on a global scale, according to Box Office Mojo.

The film also got a rating of 67 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, with 12 fresh reviews out of 18 total reviews. The film got a B rating from Cinema Score.

Bigelow's 1991 "Point Break" follows an FBI agent who goes undercover to seize a group of bank robbers who may be surfers. In Core's iteration of the film, the surfers are suspected of sperheading an array of sophisticated and unprecedented business heists.

The film stars DeelroyDeelroy Lindo, Tobias Santelmann, Clemens Schick, Matias Varela, Teresa Palmer, Ray Winstone, Luke Bracey, and Edgar Ramirez.

Along with Core at the helm of the film, "Total Recall" and "Law Abiding Citizen" writer Kurt Wimmer was on board to pen the screenplay. "Transcendence" and "Iron Man 3" producer Dan Mintz co-produced the film with Jon McMurrick, among others.

Core's "Point Break" is still showing in theaters. Watch the trailer here:
