When photos of Miss Universe Canada 2014 hockey-inspired national costume started to be posted online on Jan. 22, Chanel Beckenlehner had no idea that it made a great impact on people.
Since the Miss Universe 2014 rehearsals prohibited the use of cellular phones, Miss Universe Canada did not expect that her national costume would make a buzz.
"When I came back to the hotel, I was surprised to find that my inbox was actually flooded with messages," the candidate told CTV News.
Beckenlehner wore her eccentric attire for the pageant's "National Costume" round, where the 88 beauties were expected to put on a costume that best represents the country they are from.
Miss Canada's costume paid tribute to her native land's most favorite pastime. The costume included a hockey stick wings, Stanley cup crown, knee-high boots that tied with laces, a corset adorned with maple-leaf, and a functional scoreboard on her back.
The pictures went viral, trending on Twitter and topping Reddit.
Beckenlehner's costume was designed by the Toronto-based film and TV costume designer, Alex Kavanagh, who most of the time works in the industry of horror films. She is the brain behind "Jigsaw" costume, the villain in the splatter franchise movie "Saw."
In 2013, Miss Universe Canada Riza Santos went for a conventional Mountie look.
A few of other outstanding Miss Universe 2014 contestants' national costume looks included Miss Venezuela in a dress that resembled her native land's national tree, Miss Great Britain outfitted in a sexy version of the land's Guard uniform, and Miss Ireland as a Celtic warrior.
